TSL Major Event - Chat Log - June 30th, 2006

[16:27:21] <Say> they do not get involved with the game production for obvious reasons, they are legally unable to but they have been open minded and very nice towards the project.

[16:29:58] <Neil_R> when we decided to break the game into 3, it was more so that we could get the game out faster to the fans
[16:30:01] <Say> yes, obviously is best to make it that way so you wont hold back and wait much more than it should. It became easier in production terms and obviously it would be nice as well to release it as such.
[16:30:02] <Richard_F> It turned out that the story split itself very well in 3 parts
[16:30:05] <Karen_Soroe> like Bea mentioned the ever ending story, but that was a kick a** movie :)
[16:30:08] <Cesar_Bittar> the script being 1500 page, is something that is huge for a videogame.
[16:30:23] <Say> According to what our art director just said, it was convenient enough as well
[16:30:29] <Neil_R> i believe we were close to finishing most of pre-production at that time, and when we announced it officially we were close to completing all 2D for shadows
[16:30:43] <Cesar_Bittar> but we are happy with it, and crazy enoguh to have the goal of produce every single page of that scrupt.

[16:32:12] <Richard_F> Personally i finished Mask of Eternity and was looking for the next installment
[16:32:16] <Neil_R> i would have to say because most of the team loves the King's Quest series and has grown up with it
[16:32:18] <Richard_F> and landed on the website for this project
[16:32:23] <Cesar_Bittar> like many of you, many of us, and especially the people that started are fans
[16:32:32] <Cesar_Bittar> that's the same that happened here
[16:32:38] <Neil_R> and yes, as Rich mentioned, the last official game was not something most fans approved of
[16:32:42] <Cesar_Bittar> I was looking for a King's Quest IX.
[16:32:44] <Say> At the beggining it was a project that was quite promising, because the ending of the last one was disappointing enough to become encouraging for the team to gather up
[16:33:02] <Katie_H> I never even finished MoE because it didn't feel like KQ to me. I also came across the website and I was thrilled to be a part of a stab at wrapping up the great story that was KQ. :)
[16:33:26] <Say> obviously, KQIX became TSL. Along the way things became much more organized therefore complex and it's what you know nowadays about TSL production.
[16:33:40] <Karen_Soroe> absolutely *testify on that, and that's really good for this production,, kq atmosphere oozes through every creative pore of this production.. weirdly put..:)

[16:35:42] <Say> The problem with the release date launch announcement, is obvious that it is not on our time, but when it comes to game production it's also something that cannot be accurate
[16:35:55] <Neil_R> we must receive final approval from Vivendi before we can even think of a countdown, as the date may change depending on their requests
[16:36:06] <Say> remember that as it goes, everyone has got different other responsabilities that kinda wont let it be perfectly scheduled

[16:36:47] <YonkMod> Eivind wants to ask: The transition from 2D to 3D seems to have worked out very well, and the Land of the Green Isles looks exactly like a 3D version of King's Quest 6! Will there be mostly fixed camera angles in TSL, or will you also use more cinematic approaches, such as dynamic camera views?

[16:37:41] <Allert_L> yes, we'll be having lots of dynamic cameras, especially for conversations
[16:37:45] <Richard_F> with some dyanmic work and closeups where we can
[16:37:47] <Owen_M> We'll be using cinematic cameras views yes, thats part of the reason why we brought it into 3D in the first place as I understand it.
[16:38:02] <Richard_F> this is mostly due to the fact that it was our first screens
[16:38:02] <Richard_F> We've learned a lot since then
[16:38:05] <Owen_M> Ofcourse we will still be using a lot of static cameras throughout the game
[16:38:10] <Richard_F> The game will get more dynamic as it progresses
[16:38:13] <Cesar_Bittar> yeah, we are planning on doing a lot of close ups
[16:38:15] <Allert_L> but yeah, to keep true to the kq6 screens, we need them to stay static for most of the walking part
[16:38:16] <Karen_Soroe> ->3d's fantastic in regards to fulfilling the charm and beauty of those old old sierra kq classics

[16:38:25] <Richard_F> Parts 2 and 3 will have much more interesting camera work I can promise that
[16:38:34] <Karen_Soroe> everything handpainted down to the smallest detail
[16:39:05] <Eivind> Lovely. So there will be less 2D backdrops and more full 3D in the scenes?

[16:39:34] <Karen_Soroe> if not all screens I would take, 3d's dept better answer that
[16:39:56] <Allert_L> there's no backdrops, its all 3D, whether full models, or flat planes for things in the far distance

[16:41:48] <Karen_Soroe> and excellent weather and lightning effects on top of that, shifts from night and day puzzles like the traditional games
[16:41:56] <Richard_F> There are puzzles that are major and involve a lot of exploring and smaller ones that will help you solve the big ones

[16:43:23] <Richard_F> Best anti-aliasing you can get fo rnow is to pump the resolution

[16:46:27] <Cesar_Bittar> we normally don't do anything that would affect the balance of the game.
[16:46:31] <Say> as Cesar said, its been like an oportunity for both sides, fans to participate as well as us to listen to fans ideas

[16:46:34] <Karen_Soroe> indeed they are the backbone of this project, the fans, we're very grateful for that

[16:47:58] <Allert_L> mostly the handpainted look of kq5 and 6

[16:48:34] <Richard_F> but we realized how limiting that could be
[16:48:50] <Richard_F> Then we thought of doing the characters 3D with 2D backgrounds but that proved complicated at the time
[16:48:58] <Karen_Soroe> but handpainted graphics that feels real and solid, not cartoon-like I would add
[16:48:59] <Richard_F> So we ended up doing it all 3d
[16:49:10] <Richard_F> which allowed us to bring the BGs to life aswell
[16:49:10] <Allert_L> and we somehow felt we needed to be different than other fangames
[16:49:30] <Cesar_Bittar> I'll be honest and say I wasn't totally convinced of our direction at the time
[16:49:38] <Owen_M> By doing it in 3D we can makes sets a lot more dynamic and lively
[16:49:42] <Allert_L> something to raise the bar, and set new standards
[16:49:45] <Cesar_Bittar> let me just say I'm so glad I didn't plot against it ;)
[16:50:02] <Cesar_Bittar> because I have so much freedom as a designer now to work.
[16:50:08] <Richard_F> Michael Fortunato played a big part in the decision aswell
[16:50:10] <Allert_L> but introducing that new dimension isn't without its share of headaches
[16:50:20] <Richard_F> He proved to us that he could make the textures feel hand painted
[16:50:24] <Say> It was a call made way back when Rich was in charge of leading the team, moreso Michael Fortunato helped also with this art take. And so far we've kept it as such.
[16:50:25] <Karen_Soroe> look at Michael's handpainted art, it's a twist between cg and very precise and detail handpainting, and the res is of course super sharp

[16:50:54] <Richard_F> Since then everybody has contributed to refining the look
[16:50:55] <Say> Ever since then it's been like Allert said, trying to raise the bar and obviously keep a quality goal
